February's 'Better Than Yesterday' Recipient

Puja was selected as February's 'Better Than Yesterday' recipient.



Why did you start CrossFit?

I first started CrossFit because I had gained quite a bit of weight and was working out at a local gym by myself but was not seeing any results. During this time, I met Karla through United Way’s 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program in 2018 and when she talked about CrossFit, I became intrigued and decided to google what CrossFit was. After reading about it and watching some videos I thought that I could never do it. After a lot of negative self-talk, anxiety, and doubts, I decided to confront my fears and try out CrossFit at a local gym. I remember absolutely hating every single second of it. But I did not want to give up without trying it at least three times. So I talked to Karla about my desire to try out CrossFit. She had me come in for athlete intake and talked to Coach Lucas. I was amazed to see that a gym would care enough to learn about my current physical abilities, concerns, goals etc. EHP seemed to have a much more personal touch, which gave me the confidence to join Boot Camp…and I never looked back.


Why do you continue CrossFit?

I continued with CrossFit because it has impacted my life in so many different ways. My goals have changed drastically since I joined CrossFit. I may have started out with the goal to lose weight become thin, but now I want to become strong, take up space and view exercise as a celebration of what my body and mind can achieve. When I first joined EHP, I was a smoker struggling with alcohol abuse, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Now, I have quit smoking for almost two years, celebrated my first year of sobriety (February 13th2019) and dealing with my anxiety and depression in healthy ways. What has been your greatest achievement since joining EHP?

There are so many that it is hard to pick one. My greatest achievement since starting CrossFit has been the shift in my mentality. I find myself thinking about my strength instead of my weight, my health instead of my thinness, my achievements instead of my failures, my mental health instead of self-medication, viewing food as fuel so I can continue my journey of overcoming an eating disorder, and being able to take pride in the woman I have become.


How has your life changed since joining EHP?

I am happier, healthier, and stronger – physically, mentally and emotionally. Apart from quitting smoking, drinking, eating healthier, exercising, and taking care of my health, I now challenge myself constantly and push myself to try things that are outside my comfort zone. Thankfully, I have a community of wonderful people at EHP who push me and love trying new things with me. So far, I have tried running voluntarily, water aerobics, silk yoga, meditation, American kickboxing, and participated in events like Red River Riot, CrossFit Open etc. These are things that old Puja would have never had the courage to try.

Puja is a very active member at EHP- participating in nearly every event and challenge we offer. She is extremely dedicated to bettering herself and encouraging those around her to do the same.


Puja has improved tremendously over the years. She has committed a lot of time to bettering herself by trying new movements, improving her form and stepping outside of her comfort zone. It's been amazing to see her connect pull-ups, string toes-to-bar and lift heavier weight. Hard work pays off and we love that we can celebrate these victories with you, Puja! The only thing we can't understand about Puja is that she LOVES burpees. Who loves burpees? :)
